13 Rare Photos From Maine That Will Take You Straight To The Past

Rare mid-1950s photos of Vinalhaven showcase the island's slow and deliberate lifestyle and its historical significance in Maine.

We've done a few different posts including rare images of old Maine, but when we came across these we photos of Vinalhaven, we knew it was time for another one. If you've been to any of the islands off the coast of our state, you know how incredibly small-town they feel. They are, in some ways, a perfect representation of the way Maine once was. These photos of mid-1950s Vinalhaven will prove that life was slow and deliberate, much like it is in many places today.

1. Sailing into dock in Vinalhaven.

2. A boat pulling into Carver's Harbor.

3. Remnants of the granite industry at Hurricane Island.

These are the remnants of an old steam engine. This area was an important one for the granite industry, but when it became less profitable those involved in the quarries left. A visit to the area will still show remnants of where granite was cut out of the ground.

4. Dead Man's Island at the entrance to Old Harbor.

5. The entrance to Old Harbor.

6. A picnic at City Point.

7. The new ferry pulling into Lermond Cove, Rockland after a trip from Vinalhaven.

8. Heron Neck Lighthouse on Green's Island in Vinalhaven.

9. City Point Quarry, Vinalhaven.

10. The location of the current boat wharf in Vinalhaven.

11. An island vacation home outside of the main Vinalhaven area.

12. And an island vacation home in town.

13. Construction of the new ferry dock in Carvers Harbor.

You can't stop progress, as they say.
