Only A True New Orleanian Will Remember These 8 Historic Moments

There have been a lot of historic moments in this beloved city of ours. Ready to take a stroll down memory lane? Some of these moments made national news, some may have just made the local paper, but true New Orleanians should remember all of these memorable moments.

1. Pontchartrain Beach

This beach brings back fond memories for those that were lucky enough to enjoy it. The beach opened in 1928 and had a great run until it closed down in 1983.

2. Kenner Plane Crash

On July 9, 1982, Pan Am Flight 759 crashed into the Morningside Park subdivision in Kenner. Tragically, all 145 people onboard and eight people on the ground were killed. First responders on the scene pulled a 16-month old Melissa Trahan from the debris, who became known as the "miracle baby".

3. 1984 World Fair

Those who grew up in the area may remember this short lived fair, which lasted from May 12, 1984 until November 11, 1984. Unfortunately poor attendance and budgeting issues led this exposition to be the only one in history to declare bankruptcy during its run.

4. When the drinking age flip flopped around

Even through the legal drinking age was 21, a loophole allowed 18-year-olds to purchase alcohol up until 1995. In 1995, the loophole was closed, bringing the legal age to purchase alcohol back up to 21, but the Louisiana Supreme Court lowered it back to 18 in 1996. While many a teenager probably loved this new law, it was short lived—three months later it was raised back to 21, where it has stayed ever since.

5. The Bridge Field Accident

Shoppers at the Riverfront Mall got quite the scare when a 700-foot freighter crashed into the mall in 1996. While over a hundred people were injured, it’s a miracle no one was killed that day.

6. Hurricane Katrina

The 2005 hurricane was one of the deadliest and costliest hurricanes in the country.

7. The Gleason Kick

Any Saints fan worth their salt will remember this famous blocked punt against the Falcons that happened in the first home game after Katrina. It gave the city a much-needed morale boost, and is remembered as a symbol of recovery for New Orleans.

8. When the Saints won the Super Bowl

It finally happened and the city went nuts. Who Dat!
