The Creole State has raised plenty of unknowns who ended up being famous authors, actors, musicians, and athletes. Here are just a few of the famous people from Louisiana who called our state home before going on to do incredible things.

1. John Kennedy Toole (New Orleans)

The author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning "The Confederacy of Dunces" was born in New Orleans, where the novel is set. Sadly, he committed suicide at the age of 31 and never got to see the book's success.

2. Arna Bontemps (Alexandria)

This Creole poet and novelist was a member of the Harlem Renaissance, a revival of African American culture that occurred in New York in the 1920s.

3. Jimmy Swaggart (Ferriday)

This televangelist was once broadcast on over 3,000 stations across the world. Swaggert got his start preaching in rural Louisiana in the 1950s and lived in poverty for many years before making a name for himself.

4. Jerry Lee Lewis (Ferriday)

"The Killer" is actually Jimmy Swaggert's cousin! As rock 'n roll's first "wild man," Lewis paved the way for many other great showmen of the stage. He is considered one of the most influential rock pianists of all time.
