9 Extremely Weird Things Only People From Kentucky Do

Kentuckians have some strange tendencies not shared by those in other states. Mind you, some states might have similarities, but we have our own special way of things. Growing up in different parts of our beautiful state may bring about slight differences in our habits, but we all have uniqueness. Some may question why these things are considered weird. That is a question for someone else, as other state residents are the ones who find some of our habits odd. Here are nine weird things people from Kentucky do:

1. Cardinal and Wildcat fans

Basketball or Football, it seems "some" Kentuckians go completely overboard with sports fandom. People dress up, wear blue and white, or red and black makeup, boldly wear school colors, and sometimes even dye their hair. Some even burn couches to "celebrate". These are things only people from Kentucky do!

2. Milk and cornbread

We love to take our day-old cornbread and crumble it up in a tall, cool, glass of fresh milk. This is the perfect mid-day snack. My Mom likes to put diced tomatoes in hers.

3. Pear salad with a cherry

Take one leaf of lettuce and place a half pear on it. Put a dollop of mayo, a sprinkle of cheddar and a cherry on the pear half. This is considered a salad.

4. Kentucky Derby hats

You may not wear a hat the rest of the year, or even like hats. For some reason during the Derby, hats are all the rage. People will wear outlandish, festive, and foppish head apparel to celebrate the Kentucky Derby.

5. Ice tea

Even in the dead of winter, there will be iced tea in the fridge.

6. Handmade quilt

Most of us have at least one quilt in our house. In most cases, it was made by, and given to us via a family member. Some are tattered and worn but still have a place on the bed during cold winter months.

7. Dialect

It may be over yonder, round there, cross the way, or down the block, depending on the part of Kentucky you are in. Each area seems to have its own version of English, but we all love our land.

8. Bourbon

Some Kentuckians treat bourbon like the French treat a fine wine. It's to be sipped with a meal, as a night cap, or socially. For some, it's only for special occasions, for others, it is a frequent ritual. It's said some Kentucky officers sipped bourbon on their deathbed, and others say it ran through their veins. It's all part of life in Kentucky!

9. Food containment

It must not touch unless it's being mixed together. Some may disagree with this, but I’ve seen people refuse to eat portions of food that actually touched on the plate.

As Kentuckians, all this likely seems fine to us, but to outsiders, we are surely possessed for smearing moldy-looking cream on a sandwich. Those brave enough to taste our unique concoctions often have a change of heart. Our dialect can take some getting used to also, as I've had to explain my meaning during travels more than once.
