Discover Trolls, Fall Adventures, and Cozy Bakeries in This Charming College Town in Illinois
Home to Trinity Christian College, Palos Heights, Illinois, is the perfect day trip destination from Chicago to celebrate the fall season.
I'm a troll, and I'm proud of it.
Let me clarify: a Trinity Troll. I went to undergrad at Trinity Christian College in the small city of Palos Heights, Illinois, just outside of Chicago. While a small school of fewer than 1,000 students, the spirit of our mascot ripples through Palos Heights. If you're looking for a day trip from Chicago, Palos Heights is a lovely city just off the Metra train line that is perfect for getting into the fall spirit.
Let's take a step back and discuss this mascot. The Trinity Troll has found himself on numerous college mascot lists, usually for the most unique, weirdest, or just plain creative mascots. Palos Heights is proud of the troll, and it's not uncommon for you to find him making public appearances at community events and holiday parades. If you see the troll in the wild, don't be a stranger! He's a friendly mythical creature that's very real to the community.
Going to college in Palos Heights, autumn was always my favorite season. Trinity Christian College was founded on the site of an old golf course. As a result, the campus is spread across some truly lovely greenery. The school sits within a residential neighborhood. If you're strolling around the town, it's easy to stumble upon campus. I'd suggest visiting and grabbing a coffee from the BBC. This small coffee shop is nestled among the trees and overlooks a quaint bridge. It's a great meeting place for both students and members of the community.

Another favorite autumn pastime was visiting Lake Katherine Nature Center after class. The nature center is a restored 85-acre nature refuge that's ideal for escaping the city. Plus, it frequently hosts fall-themed events and activities. I always love stopping by Doughs Guys Bakery before a walk at Lake Katherine to pick up a yummy fall donut and warm coffee to keep me cozy on my mini hike.
Additionally, Trinity Christian College presents an annual fall fest. Here, students, alumni, community members, and visitors can get together and celebrate the season. Typically, the senior Communications and Theatre students (like I was) will present their one-act plays as part of their capstone project. It's a great opportunity to catch some affordable theatre and support education. Sporting events also take place, presentations, and a chance to gather over a few fall-themed meals make the fall festival a staple in the Palos Heights community.
A short drive away, you'll find a plethora of walking trails, parks, and outdoor activities at the nearby Forest Preserves of Cook County. I'd also suggest sneaking over to Plush Horse in neighboring Palos Park for a sweet treat.
Palos Heights is a small college town with a big punch. Trinity Christian College is a staple of the community, and the positive energy the students bring makes visiting in the fall season a blast. With Lake Katherine, cozy bakeries, and a stunning campus, Palos Heights is the perfect place to experience the beauty of fall just outside of the Windy City.
