Nestled away in a remote area of central Idaho is a state park that's home to some fascinating history. Home to three ghost towns, a visit to Land of the Yankee Fork State Park is like a trip back in time. Spend the day walking among abandoned buildings, old mines, and rugged scenery for a truly unforgettable adventure. And be sure to plan a whole day, because you're gonna need it!
Land of the Yankee Fork State Park is a fascinating historic site located between the mountain towns of Stanley and Challis. Home to old mining ghost towns, long-abandoned equipment, and beautiful views, it's definitely worth taking the day to explore.
When visiting Land of the Yankee Fork, the Visitor Center is a great place to start. It's home to an interpretive center where you can learn all about the region's rich mining history. Outside, it boasts a paved pathway that highlights surrounding archaeological excavations.
At the heart of the park are three distinct ghost towns: Bayhorse, Bonanza, and Custer. Custer and Bonanza are considered sister cities and started attracting gold seekers as early as 1870. It wasn't long before these small mining camps became prosperous communities!
In fact, Custer once reached a population of 600 residents before its eventual bust. Both Custer and Bonanza were ghost towns by 1911. It's been over a century since the towns were abandoned, but what remains of them tells a fascinating tale.
And then there's Bayhorse. Considered the first mining camp along the Salmon River, it's amazing to see what remains of this old town. You can still see the kilns that were used to make charcoal for the smelter, along with the original stamp mill.
Throughout the park, visitors can take advantage of hiking, mountain biking, and ATV trails. Camping is also available within and nearby the park via National Forest, BLM, and private campgrounds. Access to the park is just $7 per vehicle (free if you have the Idaho State Parks Passport.)
Travel through history and get to know a region of Idaho that many don't even know exists. From the beautiful mountain setting to the century-old structures, your adventure at Land of the Yankee Fork will certainly be something to remember.
