This Historic District In Southern California Will Make You Think You’ve Died And Gone To Italy

Southern California is full of hidden surprises, but there's no place quite like this little gem hiding in a quaint pocket of SoCal that is reminiscent of one of the most romantic cities in Italy. Let's take a look:

The Venice Canal Historic District, located in a residential area of Los Angeles, is full of picturesque man-made canals and walking bridges perfect for a leisurely afternoon of strolling and picture taking.

Charming bridges and quaint walkways define this area.

This historic district was developed in the early 1900s. It was designed by developer Abbott Kinney as part of his “Venice of America” project that was intended to capture the look and feel of Venice, Italy.

But it wasn't always this charming.

Developed around the same time the automobile grew in popularity, the canals were a short-lived novelty once the desire for paved roads increased. By 1929, many of the canals were filled in and paved in order to accommodate the automobile culture. The remaining canals and sidewalks fell into disrepair for over 40 years.

The Venice Canal District was eventually restored back in the '90s.

And today, it is one of the most desirable neighborhoods in the city.
