The Heart of Dixie is one of the most underrated states in the nation, and these destinations prove it. From peaceful waterfront escapes to small towns with Hallmark-style charm, here are the most exciting places to visit next year in Alabama.
1. Fairhope

Nestled along the shores of Mobile Bay, Fairhope is a lovely little town overflowing with character. The iconic Fairhope Municipal Pier stretches into the bay, offering unparalleled sunset views and fishing opportunities. Downtown Fairhope gives off Hallmark movie vibes, with locally-owned boutiques, art galleries, quaint restaurants and coffee shops, and streets lined with flowers. Kayak or canoe on the bay, and take a scenic stroll along the Eastern Shore Trail. Fairhope's timeless charm isn't going away any time soon, and it's always worth a visit.
2. Gulf Shores and Orange Beach

There's never been a better time to visit the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach region, as new nonstop flights to Gulf Shores are being added in 2026. While not a "hidden gem," per se, the area iser than many other beach towns on the Gulf Coast, and the pearly-white sands and emerald waters are often compared to those of decidedly quiet the Caribbean. It's an ideal destination for both families and couples, with amusement parks, resorts, dolphin-watching cruises, fresh seafood, and miles of pristine beaches.
3. Auburn

Auburn is famously home to Auburn University, but the Tigers aren't the only reason to visit the Loveliest Village on the Plains. That said, the campus is stunning, so you should definitely pencil in a tour while you're in town. The vibrant college town atmosphere is lively and refreshing, and watching a football game at Jordan-Hare Stadium is a must. Get to know the local culture at Toomer's Corner, where AU fans celebrate wins by wrapping the oak trees in toilet paper. This quirky tradition is just one of many things that make Auburn stand out. Check out charming shops, restaurants, and coffee shops downtown, or explore Chewacla State Park, just minutes from campus, for scenic waterfall views and outdoor recreation.
4. Wetumpka

Wetumpka has seen a significant tourism boost since being featured on HGTV's 'Hometown Takeover' in 2020. Thanks to the show, the small town underwent a major revitalization effort (while still preserving its historic architecture), and Main Street is booming with local small businesses. Visitors can tour the 85-million-year-old Wetumpka Impact Crater, enjoy water recreation activities on the Coosa River, hike the Swayback Bridge Trails, explore the Gold Star Park & Riverwalk, visit a historic fort, and experience the local arts and culture scene at Kelly Fitzpatrick Center for the Arts. Wetumpka was also a filming location for 'Big Fish' (2003), and tourists love seeing the iconic house featured in the movie.
