Shelling In California

What are some of the best beaches to find shells in California?

  • Silver Strand State Beach (Coronado): If you're looking to enrich your sand dollar collection, Silver Strand State Beach has them. Beachcombers will also find cockle shells and moon snail shells among other gems. This beach also offers beautiful beaches on the Pacific Ocean and San Diego Bay, where boating, swimming, surfing, fishing, water-skiing, and volleyball are common occurrences. One of the best joys is bringing a picnic and watching it all unfold. Four large parking lots are available where day-use fees apply. Conveniently, three pedestrian tunnels lead from the parking lots under the highway to the bay side of the park.
  • Shell Beach (Bodega Bay): The beach is located in Sonoma Coast State Park, which offers several beaches separated by picturesque rock bluffs and headlands. Not only is this pretty beach a favorite place for shelling and tide pooling, but it is also a great fishing location. The tidal pool marine life is studied by local educators as an outdoor classroom. Like many other north coast beaches, Sonoma Coast is not for swimming due to its heavy surf, strong rip currents, and sudden ground swells.
  • Crescent Beach (Crescent City): For a mental escape, head into the hypnotizing impact the noisy surf here brings. That and watching the waves wash over the three-mile coastline will take you to another world. Unfortunately, this isn't a good beach for swimming either, but we're talking about shelling, and the sandy white shores offer some good prospects. The beach was named after the crescent-shaped area of sandy beach located just south of the city. Did you know that beach wheelchairs can be reserved at Crescent Beach?
