The World’s Largest Fire Hydrant Is Right Here In South Carolina And You’ll Want To Visit

Our favorite state boasts a number of odd roadside attractions. You can see a whole list of those in this article we published in 2016. One of the coolest, and certainly the largest, is sitting in plain view (because you can’t miss it) in Columbia.

The world's largest fire hydrant is truly a work of art.

It's four stories high and reportedly weighs 675,000 pounds. Whoa!
It's called "Busted Plug" and it sits inside a retaining wall that's also part of the sculpture.

When you first roll up on it, you'd think maybe the whole thing was a construction area, but it's really by design.
Busted Plug Plaza, as it's called, is the creation of local Columbia artist Blue Sky.

The sculpture was created in 1980 with the help of 75 people from architects and engineers to general contractors - all under the direction of Blue Sky.
This work of art may or may not be forced to move to a new location in the future.

In 2016 a developer bought the property on which Busted Plug sits. Rumors immediately began to circulate about the future of this landmark. Will it be moving? Time will tell. In the meantime, the world's largest fire hydrant can be found on Taylor Street in Columbia between Marion and Bull Streets.
