South Carolina’s Very First Italian Restaurant Has Literally Been Around Forever
The Palmetto State has a multitude of Italian Restaurants; some are casual while others go all the way with a more formal atmosphere. At the same time, most people have a neighborhood Italian eatery they prefer as a go-to spot for an evening out. However, none of those other wonderful Italian eateries have a history quite as long as the oldest Italian restaurant in South Carolina.
In the scheme of things, Villa Tronco Italian Restaurant in Columbia has been around for ever, especially as the oldest restaurant in the state — and the oldest Italian eatery.
It's located in an old firehouse that's been converted, but retains the original integrity of the structure. Inside, you'll find a warm and cozy atmosphere with traditional decor.
The menu has a variety of Old World recipes handed down through generations.
Enjoy choices like Chicken Parmigana, Veal Saltimbocca, Pasta, Seafood dishes, and more. Since Villa Tronco opened in 1940, it's been the delight of locals and visitors. Mama Tronco, the founder of the restaurant, is credited with introducing pizza to South Carolina. You can read all about that in this previous article.
Make a reservation for a Thursday night, and you may be treated to some live music. Certain Thursday nights of the month are "music nights." (See the upcoming music night dates at this link.)
Live music, dinner... wine... and a little dessert (Tiramisu shown above)... That sounds like an ideal evening to me!
Villa Tronco opened 78 years ago in downtown Columbia and is not only the oldest restaurant in South Carolina, it's also the oldest Italian restaurant in the Palmetto State.
We’d love to hear the memories you’ve made at this iconic South Carolina restaurant!
