15 Reasons Why You Should Never Move To South Carolina
Moving to South Carolina might be challenging, but for many Palmetto State residents, the upsides outweigh the downsides.
South Carolina has seen an influx of new residents in the past few years, being labeled as one of the fastest-growing states in the U.S. While many have considered moving to the Palmetto State, it's important to weigh some of the reasons not to move to South Carolina. After all, some people have to regret moving to South Carolina, right?
We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but living in South Carolina has become a popular thing to do, and we're not sure folks understand what it really takes to live here. To many of us, South Carolina is the best place in the country. Our great cities are constantly getting national and international accolades for being so perfectly wonderful, and deservedly so.
People are constantly drawn to the Palmetto State by our dreamy South Carolina towns and sandy beaches, but there are a few things you should know before you pack your bags and permanently move here. If you're wondering to yourself, "What are some reasons not to move to South Carolina?" we have 15 reasons for you to consider.
1. After You Move, You Better Be Prepared To Get Swarmed by the “Other” State Bird
While the official state bird might be the Carolina Wren, there's another winged being you'll inevitably meet if you move here. Even though they're nicknamed "no-see-ums," these pesky little creatures seem like giants. A nearly invisible, blood-sucking fly, these nasty little bugs are a definite downside of moving to South Carolina.
2. USC's Basketball Team Might Make You Turn Red
The South Carolina Gamecocks have a truly devoted fanbase. And our diehard Gamecock fans will inevitably end up making you blush more often than you'd like. Pardon our French, but "Go cocks" is practically the state motto for some folks.
3. Accidentally Encountering Alligators Is by No Means “Cool”
Seriously. Not cool. Especially in your own backyard. True, alligators rarely harm people unless provoked, but this king of South Carolina wildlife is still pretty intimidating!
4. South Carolina Weather Means Plenty of Humidity and Afternoon Thunderstorms

Driving in the rain in South Carolina is always a challenge for some reason, and the late afternoon storms that seem to pop up right at quitting time are no help! Additionally, that summer humidity is also going to take some getting used to.
5. And Don’t Even Plan on Going Out if It Ever Snows
In some parts of the state, bridges close completely when it snows. Luckily, it rarely snows—which is probably why no one knows what to do when it does.
6. You'll Never Take Another Vacation Again
Say goodbye to fancy vacations because you'll be taking "staycations" after you move here. It's so beautiful, why would you want to leave? Our stunning South Carolina beaches and lakeside properties are pretty irresistible, even to residents.
7. You Can Get Ready To Say Hello to Summertime Traffic

Traffic in South Carolina is the price you pay for living in a tourist state with so many great beaches. On the bright side, being stuck in your car means you can relish the AC rather than the humidity in South Carolina.
8. ...And Construction Traffic
Traffic comes with the territory when moving to a state that everyone else is moving to! It's just another one of the pros and cons of living in South Carolina that you should weigh before moving here.
9. …And to Hurricane Evacuation Traffic
That's right—hurricane evacuation traffic is something you'll likely have to do at some point when relocating to South Carolina. But this one is worth it to live in such a beautiful place!
10. Hurricane Prep Can Be a Headache
Speaking of hurricanes, you'd better be prepared to run the drill to the fullest extent. Even if that means it was all just a precaution.
11. And Be Prepared To Pick up the Pieces, in Case It Wasn’t Just a Precaution
Hurricanes in South Carolina can be a bit of a nuisance. They can knock out trees, electricity, and take out cars. But, it's all just stuff, right?
12. You're Definitely Going To Wear Out Your Swimsuit
Prepare to spend most of your summer free time in your swimwear—you're going to want to have a few of them on hand to live the South Carolina lifestyle. Get ready to rock that suit like the babe you are, be you sunbathing beachside or lakeside.
13. Fresh Seafood Is Everywhere in the Palmetto State

If you move here, then you'd better like seafood. Crab cakes or shrimp and grits for breakfast? Yes, please! Get ready to have your days filled with lowcountry boils and she-crab soup, some of our state's favorite seafood dishes.
14. In Fact, if You Move Here, You’d Better Prepare To Gain Some Weight

There are so many great restaurants in South Carolina that you'll be eating out all the time. Whether you like banana pudding, boiled peanuts, or barbecue, you'll find no shortage of tempting eats to test your waistline.
15. You’d Better Be Prepared To Quit Your Job or Retire
Once you see how much fun it is to live in South Carolina, you'll want to spend all your time playing in the great outdoors! Why be a button-pusher when you can just relax all day? With so many hiking, fishing, kayaking, and other outdoor recreation opportunities, you'll never want to see an office again. Luckily, the Palmetto State might be the best place to retire in all of the South.
