Known for its famous sandwich topped with fries and coleslaw, Primanti Brothers started as a lone food cart in the Strip District during the Great Depression.

Every day workers from the steel mills and other neighboring businesses stopped at the food cart for a hearty sandwich.

The cart became so popular that Joe Primanti, along with his brothers, was inspired to open a brick and mortar restaurant at 18th and Smallman Streets.

One day, by happenstance, one of the Primanti Brothers' cousins fulfilled a request from a customer who wanted to know if his potatoes were frozen. He grilled several of the potatoes, putting them on top of the sandwich and...

Voila! The Almost Famous sandwich made its debut. More than eight decades later and Primanti Brothers Almost Famous sandwich, topped with golden fries and fresh coleslaw, is still satisfying Pittsburghers' hunger.

In fact, the Strip District location remains open 24 hours a day seven days a week. But, you don't have to stay in Pittsburgh anymore for the Almost Famous. The restaurant has expanded to Ohio, West Virginia, Florida, Indiana, Maryland and Michigan.
