The New UPS Delivery Service In Portland That’s Both Hilarious And Awesome
The streets of Portland will never stop being a place where you’ll find sights worthy of double takes that nearly break your neck. Over the past week we’ve seen a
man riding a horse at night through the streets while wielding a lightsaber and a unicycle-riding bagpipe player making his way through the snow. But if you thought the peculiar ways of transportation ended there, then you surely have underestimated just how weird this city can get.
In a recent
press release, UPS announced that Portland would be the first pilot city for its electrically-assisted tricycle delivery system.
To many residents this may not come as a surprise. UPS already seasonally uses
bicycles for deliveries in Portland. And, you may have already seen this new delivery system around town - UPS started delivering some packages via tricycle starting on November 21st.
The battery-powered tricycle also features pedals, achieving maximum energy efficiency according to UPS.
Equipped with an electric motor, small container and a shield on the front of the trike that serves as a window of sorts, the eBike could potentially become an important component in America's cities. The company's Senior Vice President of Global Engineering and Sustainability pointed out that the company's early history involved the use of bicycles and that they could once again become a vital role in the company's commitment to reduce carbon emissions.
So, what will determine if the rest of America will see these interesting tricycles in their cities? UPS stated in their press release that they will be looking at the trike's reliability and overall design, as well as paying attention to how it integrates into the city's infrastructure. Another thing they'll be making a point of looking at? How Portland residents respond to the idea of the tricycle!
So, why on earth would UPS think that this quirky delivery system would be a hit in our weird city of Portland?
An idea that seems to fully embrace everything that is Portland, people have begun to point out that this system could actually be incredibly beneficial to our city. Aside from the obvious factor of being environmentally friendly, the tricycles would considerably help out with the issue of city streets being so overcrowded.
Mayor Charlie Hayes has pointed out that just like all cities, Portland is constantly looking for ways to fight urban congestion and pollution. Hayes has also expressed his excitement over UPS finding such a unique solution to this constant urban battle.
Have you seen the new UPS tricycle riding around through Portland yet? You never know what types of things you’re going to see in our city streets. Just recently,
