Looking for a beautiful drive in Oregon? Check out this under-the-radar route along the Mountain Scenic Byway. You’ll drive by rocky peaks, wild rivers, and, of course, those famed blue mountains. This trip starts from Interstate 84 in Northeastern Oregon, heading southeast for about 145 miles. The drive takes approximately three hours and is just stunning. You’ll want to have your camera ready!

I haven’t been able to make this drive yet but it is on my Oregon bucket list. Seeing the blue mountains in person must be spectacular.

Oregon is home to many gorgeous landscapes and environmental features. But one of the most phenomenal is Oregon's Blue Mountains.

This enchanting mountain range gets its name because of the optical illusion that makes the mountains look blue when viewed from a distance. A combination of water vapor, dust, and oil particles in the air creates this visual effect.
The byway follows 130 miles from the Willow Creek Intersection of Interstate 84 and State Highway 74. It follows Highway 74, which is also called Heppner Highway, through Morrow County and the towns of Ione, Lexington, and Heppner. From Heppner, the drive continues south along Willow Creek Road all the way to the stunning Umatilla National Forest.

The Blue Mountain Scenic Byway became an Oregon State Scenic Byway in 1997. This project was spearheaded by the Umatilla National Forest Rural Community Assistance Program.
