One of the best, annual astronomical events – the Perseid Meteor Shower – has already started and is getting ready to peak this weekend and into early next week. Meteor showers will light up the night sky and Oklahoma is set to have some great views. Keep scrolling for more details on the best times and places to watch this mesmerizing event.
The Perseid Meteor Shower is best visible in the Northern Hemisphere and is set to peak with the most number of meteors during the early morning hours of August 11, 12, and 13.
Meteor showers occur when Earth passes through loads of debris abandoned by comets and asteroids, filling the sky with bands of light as the space rock burns up upon entering our atmosphere.
One of the best places to view the meteor shower is the Tulsa Botanic Garden. They are holding a special event on August 11 from 9-11:30 p.m. with telescopes for viewing.
Another spectacular place for viewing is in Black Mesa. This area is known for the best stargazing in the state because the night skies are so dark. No matter what part of the state you live in, step outside these next few nights and catch a glimpse of one of the best meteor showers of the year.
The best times for viewing are after 10 p.m. but prime time is when the night skies are the darkest in the middle of the night and early morning, before dusk. For more information, read this article that goes more into depth about meteors and viewing times.
