In fact, the museum was the first in the United States to focus solely on quilts and textiles. Cloth has always been part of the human experience, and art through textiles has been observed in every culture throughout history. This museum brings light to that fact, and gives visitors a whole new appreciation for this art form.
When you visit the museum, you'll get the opportunity to witness around 850 quilts, garments, and ethnic textiles. Not to mention the collection of more than 500 books on the history and making of quilts and textiles.
Tours of the museum are provided in order to bring visitors a deeper understanding of the textiles that they may not get otherwise. These tours focus on a variety of themes including history, environment, geography, storytelling, and so much more. Led by trained docents, you'll leave the tour feeling very well-informed, and maybe even a bit inspired!
The museum also hosts a wide variety of events, including lectures from experts to workshops on quilting or other forms of textile art. The museum is much more than a place to display pretty things. The San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles is open Wednesday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Admission $8 for adults, $6.50 for seniors and students, and free for children and members.
