This charming coastal town in Northern California is the type of place most people dream of living. Half Moon Bay is located just a short drive south of San Francisco. The town was developed in the 1840s. It began as an agricultural area and then had a thriving fishing industry.
Today, the area has many historic buildings, some dating as far back as 1869.
The foggy weather that is almost constant in Half Moon Bay made the town a popular place for smugglers to bring ashore their wares during Prohibition.
Today, of course, you can enjoy a libation without the need for secrecy. Half Moon Bay has several distilleries and breweries.
Half Moon Bay is known for many things– the stunning Ritz-Carlton on a cliff overlooking the ocean, its Mavericks Surfing Competition, and the annual Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival.
On a visit to Half Moon Bay you might take a whale watching tour, explore the downtown, and spend some time on one of the beaches.
Surfer’s Beach is great for, well, surfing, as well as watching talented surfers take on the waves.
Hike along the West Shoreline Access trail to reach Mavericks Beach, a destination for big wave surfers. Or hike to the serene Ross’ Cove beach, with a long stretch of sand.
When you’re packing your things for a trip to Half Moon Bay, keep in mind that although this is a beach town the weather is often chilly.
You’ll want to bring a warm coat, a hat, and gloves if you plan to be outside for awhile. After exploring the beaches, the trails, and the town, stop in to one of the delicious seafood restaurants for a tasty meal.
