10 Hometown Restaurants In North Carolina That Will Take You Back In Time
Dining is much more than just nourishment, or even delicious food. Often, certain dishes or a particular atmosphere bring you back to a nostalgic time when you dined with family or friends. Perhaps you were eating family-style dinner at Grandma's house, or enjoying casual food with your friends back in your 1990s high school days. Sometimes, dining experiences can even make you nostalgic for a time when you weren't even born yet! These 10 hometown restaurants in North Carolina all have delicious food - but they also bring up emotions of family, friends and love.
1. Wild Craft Eatery, Boone
Some of you may know this little gem by the name "Hob Nob Cafe," but they've recently changed their name to 'Wild Craft Eatery.' Honestly, it doesn't matter what they call themselves, the food is nothing short of sublime. Enjoy food from all over the world in a farm-style restaurant. The menu includes everything from Cuban nachos to Ravioli Medici to Shepherds Pie. 506 W. King Street, Boone.
2. Snappy Lunch, Mount Airy
Step right back into the 1950s at Snappy Lunch. This little lunch spot has been around since 1923, and somehow the decor from the 50s stuck. This adorable town was an inspiration for Mayberry, the fictional town on the Andy Griffith Show. Have the pork chop sandwich - Snappy's signature dish. 125 N. Main Street,
Mount Airy.
3. Mike's Farm, Beulaville
This farm got its start in 1945, back in the day when you spent sunup to sundown in the field, and then you fed everyone a big, homestyle meal in the barn. It might be 2016, but you can still have that family meal in the barn at Mike's Farm. It's served up family-style and tastes just like your grandma made it. 1600 Haw Branch Road, Beulaville
4. The Mecca Restaurant, Raleigh
Founded in 1930, this place will take you back to a time before you even born. In fact, the original bar stools were probably last reupholstered before you were born! The food is good and basic - you're definitely gonna need the fried chicken and collard greens. 13 E Martin Street,
Raleigh.
5. Circa 1810 At The Harvey Mansion Historic Inn and Restaurant, New Bern
This 9,000-square foot home is one of the last buildings in New Bern built during the Colonial era. Downstairs, you'll find Circa 1810 - a Scottish-style pub with legit offerings, including the Scotch Egg - pork sausage, egg, pickled mustard seeds and stout mustard. 221 S. Front Street, New Bern
6. Shatley Springs, Crumpler
The little cabins and restaurant at Shatley Springs were built in the 1920s, and not much has changed since then. Enjoy a family-style dinner of ham, fried chicken, biscuits and mashed potatoes. The water from the spring is said to have curative powers. 407 Shatley Springs Road, Crumpler
7. Mountain Magnolia Inn, Suites & Restaurant, Hot Springs
Dining at this restored 1868 Victorian Home will take you waaay back. Pop by just for dinner, or stay overnight. 204 Lawson Street, Hot Springs.
8. Buxton Munch Company, Buxton
Not every restaurant that takes you back in time has to take you to the 50s or earlier...this fun retro spot will take you back to your childhood (if you were born anytime between 1970 and 1990, that is!). From the vinyl 45s on the wall to the Bob Marley poster to the bright yellow smiley faces, you'll be transported right back to a way groovier time. The fresh, delicious food is served platter style - make your own tacos! Osprey Shopping Center 47359 Highway 12, Buxton.
9. Hillbilly Hideaway Restaurant, Walnut Cove
If your cousin Billy Bob had an old cabin from the 1920s that he turned from a moonshine hut to a restaurant, you'd have Hillbilly Hideaway. The inside is stuffed to the rafters with various bits of junk, and guests are encouraged to write their own graffiti on the walls, doors and pretty much anywhere they choose. Food is served family-style, on mis-matched plates with styrofoam cups. 4335 Pine Hall Road, Walnut Cove.
10. Ward's Grill, Saluda
In case you thought a little and grill and soda fountain from the 1950s couldn't possibly get any cuter, we give you Ward's Grill. Step right back in time in this quaint little place that serves up burgers, fries and thick shakes. 24 Main Street, Saluda.
