Each year, Fort Fisher Recreation Area at Kure Beach becomes a magical land filled with kites flying high, dipping above the sand and close to the waves. The two-day Cape Fear Kite Festival isn’t just for experienced flyers, but invites all levels including little ones. For those wanting to learn more about kiting, it’s also a great experience to put you in contact with professional kite flyers while witnessing larger-than-life kites take over the beach.
Each year as a way to unofficially wrap up the kite flying season, professional and amateurs alike convene along Fort Fisher Recreation area at Kure Beach and decorate the sky with elaborate kites.
The event began nearly fourteen years ago when Michael Agner a fellow kite enthusiast, invited others who shared the hobby to fly kites on the north end of Wrightsville Beach. Now, each fall the beach becomes illuminated with a decorated array of kites.
