With hundreds of towns making up the state of New York, there’s quite of few destinations that stand out a bit more than the others. With places like Tannersville that’s known for being our Painted Village in the Sky to the gated community full of mediums in Lily Dale, you might be wondering what other extraordinary towns are hiding within our state. The next spot to add onto your bucket list, this historic town in Madison County will make you feel like a kid again.
With a population of roughly 5,000 residents, the town of Chittenango has taken a page right out of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and even features yellow brick sidewalks.
For those of you who didn't know, the author of this famous book was born in Chittenango and the town has never forgotten about it! Surrounding L. Frank Baum's historical marker in town is a small poppy field, paying homage in the most charming way possible.
Embracing the unique piece of history that links the area to The Wizard of Oz, in town you can make your first stop a trip to the All Things Oz Museum.
Inside the shop you'll find a wonderful inventory full of handmade Oz related items, antiques and collectibles. This is the perfect spot to visit if you're looking to take home a gift with you to help you remember this town.
We couldn't make this up if we tried. The Wild Animal Park in Chittenango is open for the year and yes, is home to African Lions, Bengal Tigers and Black Bears... oh my!
While the animal park is home to ver 60 different kinds of exotic wildlife, it's true that you can ironically find lions, tigers and bears here in our Wizard of Oz town. Does it get anymore quirky and magical than this? The town of Chittenango is just a half-hour east of Syracuse, located in Central New York and easily accessible to most regions in our state.
