There’s No House In The World Like This One In New York
Are you tired of swooning after the same old boring, million dollar cookie cutter home? Well look no further. We’ve got the right amount of funky for you! With over 20 artists leaving their own finishing touches throughout these pods, we guarantee you’re in for a unique delight! Wait…pods? That’s right, this Western New York home is known throughout the world as the famous Mushroom House!
How captivating are these unique pods? Mushroom House was built between 1970 and 1972 with the help of architect James Johnson. The Mushroom House was originally built for Robert and Marguerite Antell, a married couple looking to build a home that was groovy, far out and full with natural materials. The overall inspiration for this magical home, you may wonder, was Queen Anne's Lace! Can you see it?
Mushroom House is made up of 80-ton concrete pods that are built into the side of a hill. Because the walls of Mushroom House are curved, there are no straight surfaces within it. With each pod serving as an essential room in the house, it definitely makes for one unique layout.
Between 2001 and 2002 the Mushroom House received an addition, adding on a breathtaking great room. Crafted by artist Adam Chesis, this laminated mahogany tree gives the room an exotic and eye-catching touch.
Captured above you can see the one-of-a-kind work of artist Wendell Castle. Recognized by many for being the father of the art furniture movement, Castle has left his incredible stamp on the Mushroom House by creating stunning mahogany doors and frames.
Having the urge to check out this fairytale-worthy home? Well, you're just in luck! The Mushroom House offers scheduled, educational tours! The 2016 spring tour is May 14th & 15th and the fall 2016 tour is October 22nd & 23rd! A percentage of the money you spend on buying a ticket to tour the Mushroom House will be donated to Monroe County parks and more specifically, Powder Mills Park.
