In a state with the history of New Hampshire, it’s not unexpected to find creepy ghost stories in well-known, public places. We’ve got haunted hotels, spooky cemeteries and tons of other creepy ghost stories that have been told around campfires for generations. But the haunting tale from this restaurant and bar has always fascinated us.
Most of the time Country Tavern Restaurant and Bar in Nashua is just your regular-looking restaurant. In fact, it's been operating as a bar and restaurant since the 1980s and it looks pretty lovely!
The farmhouse was built by Captain Ford in 1741 as a home for him and his much-younger wife, Elizabeth. Ford's busy job meant he was away at sea for months at a time, taxing the marriage almost from the start.
After a year-long period at sea, Ford came home to find that Elizabeth had given birth to a baby. Knowing it was not possible that the baby was his, he became enraged, killing the child and locking his wife in a closet.
Elizabeth was soon told what her husband had done and found herself in a rage. She tried to fight her husband, only to be overpowered by him. Stories say he stabbed her and threw her into the well behind their home.
Is the tavern truly haunted? Ask those who have felt the spirit and you'll get a resounding yes. But the best way to find out is to visit yourself!
