11 Reasons No One In Their Right Mind Visits Wyoming In The Winter

Wyoming winters are harsh and uninviting, making it an undesirable travel destination during the colder months.

There's an ongoing joke in Wyoming about how we have three seasons: July, August, and Winter. Except, if you live here, that's no joke! It's the truth. The first snow of the season may be in September, and sure, we may post about how pretty it is on Facebook... but that's just the beginning of several months of misery. Really, winter in Wyoming is terrible, and there's no reason to visit when the mercury starts to drop.

In case you need some convincing that this state is best left alone from October to April, here are a few reasons that will show you exactly why nobody visits Wyoming in the winter.

1. There's nothing to see here in the winter - it's a barren wasteland.

Every other day, some fresh snow falls on our mountaintops. After a while, it just gets old! Snow, mountains, what's the big deal? Sure, it may LOOK like a painting, but I've also seen paintings of sagebrush...

2. You won't have any reason to visit the parks.

Most of the roads around Yellowstone are closed in the winter. In fact, you would most likely have to rent a snowmobile and stay at the gorgeous, historic Old Faithful Snow Lodge. Who wants to go through all of THAT planning?

3. All the people stay indoors.

You'll barely see any Wyomingites while you're here. They're all indoors... or something. They're definitely not enjoying the snow.

4. The best trails are totally off limits.

How can you enjoy your favorite trails when they're snow covered? Snowmobiling is a lot of work, and it's only fun the first thousand times you take a ride, anyway.

5. Our roads are impassable.

Three quarters of the year, our roads aren't cleared. Please stay off of them, because we can't stand traffic... I mean, we don't want to have to pull you out of a snowdrift.

6. You won't get to see any cool wildlife.

Bears hibernate. That's all you came to see, right?

7. Our rivers and canyons are only worth visiting in the summer.

Why hike to an overlook in Sinks Canyon State Park when this is going to be your view?

8. Kids hate the cold, they'll complain the whole time.

When the kids don't have fun, the whole group won't have fun. I haven't ever seen a kid enjoy playing in the snow, have you? Nope, too cold. They'll hate it.

9. All the resorts are closed.

Hard to find a winter cabin in Wyoming. Everything closes up. Don't try to make a reservation, only the craziest Wyomingites book their getaways for the dead of winter.

10. You'll never warm up.

What makes you think it's easy to warm up in a Wyoming winter? It's not like a huge portion of our state sits on a volcano or anything. We just made up Hot Springs for movies.

11. It's WAY too windy!

Hahaha, okay... this one is for real. It IS windy here, and if you're really attached to your hat, you might want to skip this state altogether.
