Green River’s Whitewater Park Is The Place To Go For A Summer Adventure In Wyoming
Green River, Wyoming, offers outdoor activities like whitewater kayaking at Expedition Island Park, a historic site linked to John Wesley Powell's 1869 expedition.
The aptly named town of Green River is home to, well, the Green River, and it was made famous when it became the starting point for the 1869 exploratory expedition by geologist John Wesley Powell, who ended up paddling his way down the Colorado River, and into the Grand Canyon. The town itself was founded in 1868, and today it is home to about 13,000 residents who enjoy the quiet, small-town life on the Wyoming-Utah border.
Expedition Island Park is a spot that the city has preserved for outdoor lovers to enjoy.
The park is just over seven acres and includes a play area, walking paths, picnic spots, and places where you can sit and relax along the river.
The hallmark of Expedition Island Park, though, is the exciting whitewater park.
Adventurous kayakers can hit the rapids to test their skills at this man-made park that was built to encourage the kind of thirst for excitement that led Powell to set off down the Green River over a century ago.
Drop in to the south split of the river if you're experienced, or take a class with a local outfitter to learn how to best navigate these rapids.
If you're looking for a more relaxing float, the north split of the river has no rapids at all, and is perfect for a tubing trip.
If you would prefer to stay dry, you can still enjoy paddlers navigating these wild waters from the shore!
It's fun to watch while you settle down for a picnic on dry land.
