The Longest Trestle Bridge In Wisconsin Took Me To Someplace Extraordinary
Sometimes, a short walk can offer a very big payoff. In the Fox Cities, there’s a Wisconsin pedestrian bridge that’s a destination in itself. I recently enjoyed a stroll on the Fox Cities Trestle Trail. I thought it would be a pleasant place for a walk by the lake, but it was far more than I imagined – a bridge that offers numerous places to relax and take in views of a beautiful lake, and a unique perspective on the Fox Valley. Here’s why the Fox City Trestle is a pedestrian bridge that’s worth seeking out.
The secret is out on this trail.
The day I arrived, there were plenty of people enjoying the bridge, including families, couples, and single bikers and runners.
The bridge is nice and wide, so there’s room for everyone.
I could see why it was so popular. The bridge offers some gorgeous views of Little Lake Butte Des Morts.
Looking north, you can see the 441 Bridge. The day I was there, boaters and anglers were out on the lake.
The pedestrian bridge is a second act for this lake crossing.
In another life It was a railroad bridge, part of the Chicago & Northwestern Railway. You can see the old railroad structure – if you look over the side, you can see interesting bits of art.
Back when this was a railroad bridge, it was known as the “Mile Bridge.” I could see why – it’s pretty long.
While it’s not a mile, it’s the longest bridge of its kind in Wisconsin, a full 1,600 feet.
You might want to allow a little time to cross this bridge – there are plenty of places to take in the view or rest for a bit.
Some kids were fishing the day I crossed, and I couldn’t resit taking a lot of photos as I worked my way across.
When I reached the other side of the lake, I found myself in Menasha.
Signs tempted me to continue – trails allow bikers and pedestrians to continue around the lake on the Loop the Little Lake trail system, a 3.5-mile loop that encircles Little Lake Buttes des Morts, connecting Fox Crossing, Menasha, and Neenah. It’s also part of the Friendship trail, a trail that will eventually run from Stevens Point to Manitowoc.
I’m glad I finally hiked this bridge - I plan to return with my bike for a longer adventure!
