This Entire Town In Wisconsin Was Turned Into A State Park You Can’t Pass Up

There’s more to state parks in Wisconsin than natural beauty and recreational opportunities. There’s history, too! And in the case of Tower Hill State Park, that history includes the remnants of Helena, a former mining town. In fact, the town was actually turned into a park as a way to preserve it.

State parks in Wisconsin all have something to offer. When it comes to Tower Hill State Park in Spring Green, that something is a peek into the once-bustling town of Helena.

Presently, Helena is listed as an unincorporated community in Iowa County; however, that’s not Helena’s original locale.

Since its establishment in 1828, Helena moved three times. The first two locations, which are just a few miles from present-day Helena, occupied the area that is now Tower Hill State Park.

Today, several signs dot the park’s landscape, providing information on Helena and the important role it once played in the manufacture and shipping of lead shot.

Signage isn’t the only way visitors can learn about Helena’s past, though.

A few historic buildings also serve as a reminder of what once was.

Among the park's most popular buildings are the restored shot tower and melting house, which feature exhibits on lead shot-making.

At one time, Helena was home to a retreat known as Tower Hill Pleasure Company. A few of the retreat’s buildings, include a log gazebo and pavilion, are still standing.

Two miles of trails meander through Tower Hill State Park, making it easy to explore the park’s best sites.

Follow the trails to all of the park’s historic structures and through a tunnel that leads to the bottom of an old mine shaft.
