Enjoy Expansive Views From Atop A 300′ Rock Formation At Wisconsin’s Roche-A-Cri State Park
Roche-A-Cri State Park offers a unique outdoor experience with a 300-foot rock formation, scenic views, and historical petroglyphs.
If you’re looking for a fun way to spend the day outdoors, you won’t be disappointed with Roche-A-Cri State Park. In addition to typical amenities, like picnic tables and campsites, the park is home to a huge 300’ rock formation. Even better, there are stairs, so you can climb to the top and soak up some stellar views. Take a look:
Nestled in the village of Friendship, you’ll find Roche-A-Cri State Park.
The 605-acre park is centered around a 300’ rocky outcrop.
Not only is the towering rock formation the centerpiece of the park, but it also inspired the park’s name. Roche-A-Cri is French for “crevice in the rock.”
There’s an easily accessible trail, Top of the Rock Trail, which leads straight to the massive rock formation.
Boasting both beauty and history, the rock outcropping features Native American petroglyphs and pictographs. Signage at the base of the rock explains its history and significance.
But you can do more than admire the rock from its base. There’s a stairway you can take straight to the top.
Requiring a bit of effort – but completely worth it – there are about 300 stairs to climb.
However, once you arrive at the top, you’ll be treated to amazing vistas.
Roomy viewing platforms along the way allow you to safely take in the surroundings.
The photo-ops are plentiful, so be sure to have your phone or camera handy.
And don’t forget to strike a pose at the selfie stand, which is located on the right-hand side of the petroglyphs viewing platform.
This utterly unique hike is suitable for hikers of all ages and skill levels – so long as they’re able to tackle the stairs.
And remember, while dogs (on leashes) are allowed in the park, they aren’t allowed on the stairs. So, if you do bring your 4-legged friend, be prepared to forgo the trek to the top of the rock.
The park is open year-round from 6 a.m. - 11 p.m. The stairway to the top of the mound is open from 6 a.m. to sunset. For more information, call (608) 339-6881. You can also visit the park’s website.
