I Wandered Through the Yards of the Rich and Famous on Lake Geneva’s Lake Shore Path in Wisconsin

One of the best walks in Wisconsin cuts through the yards of some very, very nice homes. Geneva Lake Shore Path traces the edge of Geneva Lake along a series of walkways that are literally in the front yards of historic mansions. I’ll admit, part of me felt a little like I was trespassing at first. But this spectacular Lake Geneva path is open to everyone—here’s what I found on the trail.
I started my trek in the heart of Lake Geneva. This gorgeous lakefront community is one of Wisconsin’s top tourist destinations, offering great shopping and dining, golf, lake fun, and more. I popped into the visitor center to grab some brochures. Lake Geneva is also one of the state’s most walkable destinations. While the downtown makes for a pleasant stroll, you’ll want to bring some good walking shoes and continue your hike around the lake.
I entered through a small gate and found myself in another world. In the 1800s, wealthy Chicago residents built incredible lakefront mansions on Geneva Lake. As I walked, the mansions were on my left, and the beautiful lake was on my right. The homes have always been home to the rich and famous, and that continues today. You have to be a person of considerable means to afford one of them! In fact, as I peered at the lavish architecture, I learned that this unique public access actually dates back to early Potawatomi footpaths.
Later settlers legally mandated that the shoreline remain public domain. That meant titans of industry—like the Wrigley family of chewing gum fame and various Midwestern beer barons—had to concede a permanent public right-of-way directly across their private, pristinely manicured lawns.
The path’s surface is always changing, which definitely keeps you on your toes and makes the stroll feel like a true adventure. The section I hiked included areas of grass, stepping stones, brick, and wooden planks. I also passed beautifully landscaped grounds adorned with blooming hydrangeas, ornate iron fences, and vintage private boat houses that honestly look bigger than my own home.
There’s a lot to explore here. There are 21 miles of lakeshore, but the winding pedestrian trail actually covers about 26 miles in total. If you're feeling wildly ambitious, it takes an average walker about 8 to 10 hours to complete the entire continuous loop. I did not hike the whole path, though. I just walked until I felt like turning around, soaking up views of sprawling, legendary estates like the massive Stone Manor before heading back to civilization. After all, there was a double scoop of ice cream waiting for me downtown!
There’s a lot of trail to explore—and I think it's one of the best walks in Wisconsin. I plan to return to hike more of this wonderful path soon.
