Hundreds Of Eagles Invade Wisconsin Every Winter And It’s A Sight To Be Seen

Wisconsin is a prime location for spotting bald eagles, especially during the winter months.

There’s no denying it; eagles are majestic creatures. Spotting one is a real treat. And luckily, the chance of seeing one (or several) increases greatly during the next couple of months since hundreds of eagles will be migrating to Wisconsin. Take a look at these gorgeous eagles in Wisconsin:

Did you know Wisconsin is located in the heart of bald eagle country? It’s true. In fact, Wisconsin has one of the highest bald eagle populations in the country!

Bald eagles in Wisconsin are not rare, and they are majestic to behold.

Though eagles are present in Wisconsin year-round, winter is the best time to spot the majestic birds — and there are a couple of reasons for that.

Most people wouldn’t think that the best time to see eagles in Wisconsin is during the colder months.

Each winter, like most other birds, eagles migrate. However, unlike other migrating birds, eagles don’t migrate because of cold weather. Instead, eagles migrate in search of food.

So you are bound to see some Wisconsin eagles this winter.

You see, fish are the main part of a bald eagle’s diet; however, they can’t retrieve fish from frozen rivers. So, thousands of eagles winter along the Mississippi River, which doesn’t freeze completely due to its turbulent waters.

The bald eagles in Wisconsin will congregate along the banks of the river during the colder months.

Additionally, as water goes through the locks and over the dams of the river — so do fish. As the fish are tumbled about, they become stunned, making them easy prey for eagles soaring above.

It’s easy pickings for the wildlife in Wisconsin.

The influx of eagles isn’t the only thing that increases your chance of spotting one, though. The bare landscape that comes along with the winter season greatly ups visibility.

With no leaves in the tree, it’s much easier to spot eagles in Wisconsin.

So, where should you look for eagles? Anywhere in the state, really. Eagles have been seen in every county in Wisconsin, except for Milwaukee County. More specifically, any river with a dam is likely to have eagles flying above.

Wisconsin eagles are smart and beautiful, so keep your eyes peeled.

Top viewing spots in the state include Ferry Bluff Eagle Council Overlook, Prairie du Sac Hydroelectric Dam, and the bluffs behind Wollersheim Winery (pictured).

If you’re in one of these areas, chances are high you will see bald eagles in Wisconsin.

When visiting any of the places above, be mindful of signage because some require that you view the bald eagles from your car. You’ll also find some informative signage at a few places.

You can also attend one of the state’s many eagle watching events, such as Sauk Prairie's Bald Eagle Watching Days, which is a fun annual activity that usually happens each January. Another event, Bald Eagle Appreciation Days, is scheduled for late February in Prairie du Chien. Both bring in bird watchers from all around the country.
