Wisconsin is filled with big, well known state parks, and these natural areas can draw some huge crowds. Some of the busiest state parks can even run out of parking on certain days. If you want to enjoy nature with a little more peace and tranquility, not all is lost – just head to a town park. The state is filled with these little parks, and they are often hidden gems. One wonderful little park is Port Des Morts Park, one of Wisconsin’s best local parks. I scrambled over the rocks here as a kid, and today there are some improvements that make it much easier to access – but on many days you’ll still have the park all to yourself.
The park is located in the town of Liberty Grove, and the park is between the communities of Gills Rock and Northport. It’s located at the far end of the Door County peninsula, and it’s about as far north as you can go in Door County without needing a ferry ticket.
If you’re early for a ferry, or are out for a scenic drive, this is the perfect place to get out and stretch your legs.

It’s not a huge park, but the scenery here is spectacular. There’s a picnic table, bench, and grill – it’s a spectacular place for a picnic.
For many years, the beach was a little difficult to reach, but a staircase was added that makes the descent a lot easier. Scuba divers can even get their gear down to the shore.
The view from the beach is remarkable, and it gives you a sense of what this area was like before settlers arrived.
It’s not a soft sand beach, but it’s rugged, wild, and beautiful – it practically begs to be photographed. Depending on the day and the time, you may have this scene all to yourself!
