Milwaukee is bursting with greenery everywhere you look, but some things you have to look a little harder to find. This secret garden in Wisconsin hidden in Milwaukee's Lindsay Heights neighborhood is one of our city's best-kept secrets. From breathtaking flowers to vegetables grown by community members, Alice's Garden in Wisconsin holds much more than meets the eye.
Welcome to Alice's Garden!
This two-acre urban community garden on Milwaukee's north side is one of the city's best-kept secrets and one of the prettiest gardens to visit in Wisconsin.
The creation of this garden was a long time coming.
Between 1948 and 1971, there was a construction freeway project planned and during this time, many areas of the neighborhood were torn down - only for the project to later be canceled. In 1971, a garden was planted in the vacant space where houses had been deconstructed on 21st and Garfield.
The garden is named in honor of Alice Meade-Taylor, a Milwaukee advocate and former Executive Director of Milwaukee County Extension.
Meade-Taylor dedicated her entire career to building communities that nurtured education, including gardening programs for youth and families.
This community garden truly brings people together.
Not only does this garden strengthen the Lindsay Heights neighborhood, all are welcome to come plant something and watch grow. The garden is full of beautiful flowers and vegetables, all planted by Milwaukeeans!
Take a walk through The Labyrinth and reflect on life.
The Labyrinth is a circle filled with healing herbs and plants in the center of Alice's Garden. Everyone is welcome to enter and take a breath to reflect on life and be present.
Alice's Garden has also recently started an initiative to bring people to the table.
"The Table" is a community church that gathers in the garden during the summer for dinners. Anyone is welcome to join!
This secret garden is overflowing with beauty and community spirit.
There's so much to love about this beautiful, blooming space. One visit here and you'll be coming back every time you feel the need for a mini-escape into nature.
Alice's Garden is certainly one of the best gardens in Wisconsin. You can find it at 2136 N. 21st St., Milwaukee.
