West Virginia is home to some incredible waterfalls. One of the most popular to visit is the majestic five-story Blackwater Falls. But hidden just a short 20-minute drive from those legendary falls is a spot that's almost too stunning to describe. If ever you've researched "waterfalls near me in West Virginia," and you happen to live near Tucker County, then you're in luck! A quick drive and even briefer hike will lead you to an emerald waterfall that you'll want to see for yourself.
The North Fork Blackwater River drops over a ledge creating the spectacular 35-foot Douglas Falls. The falls splash down into a unique emerald-colored pool, creating a landscape unlike any other.
Douglas Falls is just a short drive from Blackwater Falls State Park. To get to this extraordinary spot will require a short drive down a bumpy gravel road.
The end of the road is blocked off with a gate but it is open to foot traffic. A short path beyond the gate will take you directly to the base of the falls.
Arrive at the base of this natural wonder and you'll be glad you made the trip. The prominent cascade has that wow factor that is utterly entrancing.
During times when the river flow is extra heavy, the mist sprays off the falls. This secluded, little-known lagoon is a photographer's paradise.
The pools of water below the falls that shift in color from emerald to aquamarine are distinctly unique. Also unusual are the orange stained rocks that gained their color from West Virginia's coal mining days.
Upstream from Douglas Falls are several beehive-shaped ovens that were once used to burn coal into a substance known as coke. The acids that seeped into the water during that period stained the rocks orange.
A visit to Douglas Falls belongs on every waterfall chaser's bucket list. Bring your camera and wear sturdy shoes to walk on those slippery rocks.
