The Best Dog-Friendly Hikes in West Virginia for an Outdoor Adventure

1. Long Point Trail, Summersville

Long Point Trail is a 4-mile out-and-back trail in Summersville. It's considered an easy route, taking about 90 minutes to complete. The path takes hikers south through wooded areas and culminates with breathtaking water views. Dogs are welcome on the trail, but owners note there is an unrestricted cliff to mind.

2. North Fork Mountain Trail to Chimney Top, Cabins

The North Fork Mountain Trail to Chimney Top is perfect for dogs and owners who prefer a challenge. The 5.2-mile out-and-back trail near Cabins, West Virginia, is considered hard. The trail is rocky and steep, gaining almost 2,000 feet in elevation, but it pays off with amazing views. Some dog owners needed to give their dogs a boost along the path. Others note that there are no streams, so bring plenty of water for you and your dog.

3. Blackwater Falls, Davis

The Blackwater Falls trail in Blackwater Falls State Park is short and sweet, 0.4 miles long. However, it's a loop trail, so you can complete it multiple times if you're looking for a longer hike. The moderately challenging trail includes many stairs to a waterfall observation deck, where hikers can enjoy incredible scenery. Depending on the weather, the stairs can become slick or icy. Dogs must be on a leash.

4. Balanced Rock Trail, Athens

The Brush Creek Falls Trail is a moderately challenging 3.7-mile out-and-back trail, ideal for dogs and their owners who prefer a hike that's not too easy or too hard. The path features incredible waterfall views year-round. Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.

5. Sandstone Falls Boardwalk and Island Loop Trail, Hinton

The Sandstone Falls Boardwalk and Island Loop Trail is an easy, 1.0-mile hike in New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. It features stunning views of the 1,500-foot-wide Sandstone Falls, the biggest waterfall on the New River. Hikers note that the path has tree roots and rocky parts, and dogs must be on a leash.
