You Can Both Swim and Hike on This West Virginia Trail—It’s Summer Perfection
Take a scenic forest hike and cool off at a sandy beach—all in one trip to Cacapon Resort State Park, a must-visit summer spot in West Virginia.
Warm weather in West Virginia is best spent outdoors—and if you’re someone like me who likes to pair a little hiking with a lake swim, Cacapon Resort State Park in Berkeley Springs is a great place to do both. It’s home to more than 6,000 acres of forested hills, scenic trails, a lodge, a golf course, and a nature center—plus a sandy swimming beach on Cacapon Lake, all within easy reach of each other.
One of the best ways to start your visit is with a walk along the Cacapon Ridge Trail. This moderate 1.5-mile loop begins near the park’s bathhouse or close to the bridge near the lake. The trail winds through a mix of oak, pine, and hickory forest with gentle elevation changes that give it just the right amount of challenge. It’s not a long or difficult hike, making it a good pick for most walkers, including families with older kids.
As you make your way around the loop, you’ll pass through shady stretches, spot native plants like mountain laurel, and may hear birds chirping or the sound of Indian Run, a nearby stream. Sandstone outcroppings break up the trail with interesting textures, and occasional openings in the trees let in pockets of light. While the trail is clearly marked and easy to follow, sturdy footwear is still a good idea, as parts of the path can be uneven.
Once you’ve finished the trail, the lake is just a short walk away. If you started near the bathhouse, you’re already quite close—the beach is less than a quarter mile downhill from the trailhead. Cacapon Lake is man-made and surrounded by forested hills, with a designated swimming area that’s open during the summer season. The water stays cool and clear, and the sandy beach makes it easy to relax after your hike.
The swimming area features restrooms, changing facilities, and picnic tables, making it a convenient spot for a longer stay. Lifeguards are typically on duty when the beach is open, and the area is well-maintained by park staff. Whether you want to go for a swim, read by the water, or just cool off your feet, it’s a peaceful place to unwind.
Helpful tips for your visit:
- There’s a seasonal snack bar with light bites, but bringing your own lunch is always a good idea.
- The trail is dog-friendly, but pets aren’t allowed in the designated beach area.
- Parking is available near both the beach and trail access points.
- For directions, recent reviews, and trail conditions, check out Cacapon Ridge Trail on AllTrails.
- Swimming at the lake typically requires a small daily fee.
Cacapon Resort State Park makes it easy to spend a full day outdoors without needing to rush. The combination of a forest hike and a refreshing lake swim keeps things simple—and sometimes, that’s the best way to enjoy summer.
