This Is the Ultimate Moonlight Hike for July’s Buck Moon in Washington
There's nothing quite like a full moon guiding you overhead.
There are many bucket-list-worthy destinations within Olympic National Park, but one of the most popular is Hurricane Ridge. This is the most easily accessible mountain area within this Washington park, and a beautiful place to explore no matter the season. On the evening of July 10, 2025, this is a small corner of Washington State where you’ll want to be to witness the Full Buck Moon. And we know just the spot where you can enjoy these nighttime views—the Hurricane Hill Trail.
A Full Buck Moon is the name given to any full moon that occurs in the month of July. Around this time of year, bucks (male deer) begin to grow their antlers, which is where the name of this full moon originated. In 2025, the Full Buck Moon will occur on July 10. And while there are many hikes throughout the Evergreen State where the bright light of the moon will guide you, we strongly recommend the Hurricane Hill Trail, and for several reasons.
The Hurricane Hill Trail is one of the most popular hikes in this area of Olympic National Park. It is approximately 3 miles round trip and paved. However, there are some steep inclines, so it’s not the easiest climb, but it’s well worth the views. You’ll find the trailhead near the end of Hurricane Hill Road and in the northwest corner of the parking area.
This trail is stunning. You’ll walk along the south side of Hurricane Hill and enjoy Olympic Mountain views throughout your journey. If you make it to the top, you’ll be able to see for miles. On clear days, you can even capture views of Vancouver Island and the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
During the day, this trail gives you a glimpse into just a few things that make Olympic National Park so spectacular—its beauty, wildlife, and natural wonders. You may even want to time your adventure just right so you can enjoy either a sunrise or a sunset from the top—it's breathtaking.
However, at night and under a full moon, this trail is just as spectacular and makes for the perfect outdoor adventure.
In fact, I recommend you lace up your hiking shoes on the night of July 10, and participate in the Hurricane Ridge Full Moon Hike. Beginning at 9:30 p.m., you can start your adventure at the Hurricane Hill trailhead. Climbing at your own pace, you'll hike to the summit of Hurricane Hill. At the summit, you can enjoy a constellation tour from an astronomer and learn more about the night sky above you. This experience is free, and neither a reservation nor registration is required. Keep in mind that this event may be canceled if the weather is poor or the conditions are too cloudy.
Due to the paved terrain, you don’t have to worry about large rocks and roots causing hazards along your way as you climb under the moon and stars. You’ll still want to keep an eye out for wildlife and always come prepared with appropriate hiking gear and clothing, as nights at the higher elevation can be a little chilly.
Although, no matter what time of day you choose to tackle this trail, the views will astound, portions of the trail may challenge you, and this adventure is one you’ll remember for a long time.
