Stroll Then Swim on This Beach Hike in Washington That’s Perfect for Summer

With forest views and ocean waves, you can easily spend hours on this Washington trail.

Deception Pass is one of Washington's most popular state parks. In fact, millions of people come to explore this park and marvel at its natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and sights like the Deception Pass Bridge. While there are many things to do and see here, if you are looking for a short and sweet adventure that’s perfect for a summer day, I recommend tackling the North Beach Trail. Stroll then swim on this journey—it’s perfect for a warm-weather adventure.

The North Beach Trail is one of several hiking trails within Deception Pass State Park in Oak Harbor, Washington. This out-and-back trail is short—only 2.1 miles—and is quite easy. It’s perfect for beginner hikers and even young explorers. You’ll find the trailhead in the Scenic Vista parking lot on State Route 20.

The trail follows the northern coastline of this Washington State Park. And while there’s much to love about this hike, I particularly love the variety of views you can witness. For example, you’ll enjoy ocean scenes, and on clear days, you can even spot islands out in the distance. You’ll also walk through forests where tall trees loom high above and greenery surrounds you. Take your time on this hike and spend a few minutes being still, listening to nature’s soundtrack playing for you. This is a wonderful place to escape the crowds and enjoy some quiet.

This trail follows North Beach, taking you toward the park’s amphitheater. On hot days, you can hop in the water and cool off along the trail. The sand isn’t the softest along this beach, so water shoes are recommended, but you can splash and play before you head home.

Or, you can always just sit and listen to the waves crash on the shore before you turn around and make the journey back to your vehicle. No matter whether you admire the water from a distance or cool off by jumping in the waves, something will mesmerize you about this destination.

If you want to spend even more time outdoors and in this beautiful area, you can also spend the night at Cranberry Lake Campground. Located near Deception Pass State Park’s Amphitheater, sites are available for tents or RVs, and you’ll find campsites surrounded by trees and near the water. It takes your summer adventure to the next level.

There are some breathtaking places to explore in Washington, and Deception Pass State Park is certainly near the top of that list. There’s nothing quite like the North Beach Trail for a summer adventure in this park. Hike, explore, admire, swim — it’s pure bliss.
