This Easy Virginia Hiking Trail Delivers Big Views for a Romantic Valentine’s Day
Even the best relationships can be a bit rocky sometimes—just like this trail that leads to our favorite view in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
When you're with that special someone, it can make you feel like you're on top of the world. How fitting, then, would it be to take your sweetheart on a mountaintop adventure for Valentine's Day? There are so many awe-inspiring hikes in Virginia, but we've singled out what might just be the most romantic this time of year.
Come with us as we journey up Humpback Rocks and explore one of the most stunning overlooks in Virginia. I've always loved Humpback Rocks. It's one of those hiking trails that you can complete in a fairly short amount of time—it takes the average hiker around 90 minutes—but packs quite a punch. The elevation gain is intense; in just 1.8 miles, you'll have climbed nearly 800 feet. But every step is a little bit of an adventure, and it's one of those hikes that'll make you feel more connected to your partner.
The terrain begins with some gradual steps that pick up quickly. You're surrounded by woods for most of the way, but glimpses through the trees reveal just how high you've climbed. The last third of the trail is what I'd classify as a bit of a scramble. There's no technical climbing involved, but you will have to navigate around and over some rocks, so sturdy hiking shoes are a must. It's easy to get disheartened during this part of the hike, but rest assured that the view is coming up quickly.
Finally, after nearly a mile of pure incline, you'll have reached the top. And what a magnificent view it is! The Shenandoah Valley reveals itself beyond the craggy rocks at the top, giving you the sense that you've climbed to the top of the world. Standing atop Humpback Rocks, you'll have reached an elevation of 3,080 feet above sea level. From here, hikers can choose to return down the way they came or complete the loop via the Appalachian Trail for a 4.2-mile circuit.
When my husband and I were engaged, we chose Humpback Rocks as a place to take our engagement photos. We had hiked this trail several times while dating, and couldn't think of a more romantic place to celebrate and look forward to our wedding. The photos from this trail are among my favorites to this day, and I think you'll agree that the view from the top is simply spectacular.
Even on a cloudy mid-winter day in February, it's hard not to feel absolutely inspired. Virginia really is for lovers, isn't it?
Plan your mountain-top hiking adventure when you check out the official AllTrails listing, which includes up-to-date information about trail conditions, maps, and more. The Blue Ridge Parkway is subject to closures throughout the winter, so it's best to check before you visit.
Another quick word of advice: the Humpback Rocks parking lot, which is located at Milepost 6 along the Blue Ridge Parkway, fills up quickly, especially on the weekends. Your best bet is to arrive early before the crowds. Then, after you've finished, treat yourself to some homemade baked goods from Belle Bakery in Charlottesville's Belmont.
