What This Drone Footage Captured At This Abandoned Virginia Faire Is Truly Grim

The abandoned Virginia Renaissance Faire, once a vibrant exhibit near Fredericksburg, is now an overgrown site captured in stunning drone footage.

The abandoned Virginia Renaissance Faire is perhaps one of the most unusual abandoned locations in the state. Recently, I wrote a piece that outlined a road trip through Virginia's ghost towns. The faire was included on the map, although due to overgrowth and nearby private property, this site is almost impossible (and probably dangerous) to visit. That's where modern technology comes in and saves the day. This drone footage of the abandoned Renaissance Faire provides a breathtaking aerial view of what remains of the site today. Here's a brief background to prepare you for the video:

Just outside of Fredericksburg, the buildings of a 1996 Renaissance exhibit remain empty and overgrown. Locals refer to the area as "Sherwood Forest," and it was once land that belonged to George Washington's mother.

It cost nearly five million dollars to renovate and construct the different fair buildings. This large investment was made by the Renaissance Entertainment Corporation. In its heyday, the park had multiple structures, including castles, a wooden ship, and even a jousting field.

Sadly, it was just 3 short years later, in 1999, that the fair closed and ultimately became abandoned. This was largely due to the nearby swamp, poor weather. technical issues and low ticket sales. While most of the area is being reclaimed by nature, the video will provide a glimpse of just how big the property was.
