Virginia is spoiled with natural beauty. Our hiking trails will truly take us to some of the most scenic places in the entire country! There are some trails in Virginia that can only be described as "out of this world." And there's one inside the Channels Natural Area Preserve that qualifies as just that. It's here that adventurers will find what can only be described as a rock maze. Working your way through the sandstone crevices and boulders of this rock maze in Virginia, you'll feel like a true explorer. Here's more on this phenomenal adventure awaiting you just outside of Abingdon, Virginia.
Within the Channels State Forest is a 721-acre high-altitude forest located in southern Virginia’s Washington County. This exquisite parcel of land is known as the Channels Natural Area Preserve.
Inside the preserve, you’ll find the Great Channels of Virginia, which are highly impressive sandstone formations dating back a whopping 400 million years. Geologists believe that the Channels were formed during the last ice age when the sandstone cap was under the pressure of ice wedging.
Exploring these unique outcroppings, you’ll feel like you’re inside a massive maze. But don’t worry; you won’t get lost! The area is well-marked and maintained. That being said, it never hurts to have an AllTrails account handy. The trails in this region are 6+ miles long, so having a trail map handy is important.
You’ll continue to climb through the rocks as you reach elevations of over 4,000 ft. In a relatively short period of time, you’ll notice that the higher altitude has an effect on the forest habitats.
Reaching the top, you’ll enjoy an absolutely breathtaking view of the Virginia Highlands. It's the perfect spot to enjoy a quick lunch and munch on some trail snacks. I don't know about you, but a peanut butter and jelly sandwich just tastes different at the top of a hiking trail.
So if you're in search of a trail that's unlike anything else you've ever experienced, you'll be excited to discover the trek through the Channels via this rock maze in Virginia. Be sure to read the reviews on AllTrails before you go, so you can get updated information before you hit the parking lot. For example, if you plan on doing this hike on the weekends, get there early. The parking lot fills up quickly!
