These 17 Breathtaking Views In Virginia Could Be Straight Out Of The Movies

Virginia offers stunning natural and historic settings that rival Hollywood movie sets.

Virginia has been the setting for many movies over the years. We've hosted Hollywood superstars and created breathtaking scenes in both our beautiful rural areas and our historically rich urban settings. And while we're no Hollywood, we can give any movie set a run for its money when it comes to beauty, both natural and man-made. The following photos show some of Virginia's finest show-stoppers.

1. Fall at the Shenandoah National Park…as seen from the Skyline Drive.

I don’t know what the title of this movie would be, just that if it involves scenes like this, I would very much like to be in it.

2. King Neptune watches over the shores at Virginia Beach.

King Neptune might only be a statue on the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, but in this photo, he seems to come alive.

3. A misty mountain town in Gate City.

The fog drifting down from the mountains lends an ethereal feel to this beautifully captured moment.

4. Birdwood Drive at the Birdwood Golf Course in Charlottesville.

This exquisite shot has all of the ethereal beauty of a Stephen King adaptation – without the nightmares.

5. Great Falls Park in McLean.

This long-exposure shot takes you to another world.

6. Sunset at Stony Man summit.

The set for the next Lord of the Rings, perhaps? Simply breathtaking.

7. Snowy panorama of Mount Vernon near Alexandria.

Taken just after the recent snows in Virginia, this scene shows just how timeless the home of George Washington really is.

8. The Chincoteague Island Wildlife Loop.

I can’t think of a more perfect movie setting than the stunning little island of Chincoteague.

9. Sunrise by the pier at Virginia Beach.

This beautiful scene has romance written all over it.

10. Waiting for the train at Clifton Forge.

While this photo looks like it was taken straight from the reels of a 1920s movie, it’s actually a reenactment performed at the C&O Historical Society’s "Steam Under the Stars." This photo was captured in June 2011.

11. Richmond skyline at night.

Again, THIS is why Richmond makes such an amazing movie setting.

12. A colorful street scene in Old Town Alexandria.

This vibrant street in Alexandria’s Old Town is the perfect reflection of the city’s colorful personality.

13. A Civil War reenactment in Tazewell County looks eerily real.

It’s uncanny how realistic this moment looks during a reenactment of the skirmish of Jeffersonville in Tazewell.

14. One of the wild ponies at Grayson Highland State Park.

Some things were simply meant for the big screen. I believe this pony knows it.

15. A peach orchard in bloom in Greenwood.

The colors of Virginia are at their peak in this beautiful shot captured in Albemarle County.

16. The swinging bridge in Tyro.

The bridge was hand-built across the Tye River along the Appalachian Trail. And this photo shows it to perfection.

17. This picture-perfect scene was captured at the Booker T. Washington National Monument in Hardy.

The coolest thing about this photo, is that it’s NOT in a movie. This is the kind of moment that you can actually see and experience in Virginia. Pretty amazing, huh?

Finding breathtakingly beautiful images of Virginia is not the hard part. The hard part is knowing when to stop. As we all know, these images only scrape the surface of Virginia’s beauty.
