This Underrated Recreation Area Is the Perfect Dupe for Shenandoah National Park

Tucked away off the Blue Ridge Parkway, this little-known recreation area has everything we love about Shenandoah National Park without the crowds.

Shenandoah National Park is an iconic destination in Virginia. But it's highly popular, especially during warmer months of the year. When you're itching to get to the mountains but don't want to navigate crowded trails or parking lots, we have the perfect alternative to add to your repertoire. Otter Creek Recreation Area is located along the Blue Ridge Parkway, offering visitors a more secluded yet just as beautiful mountain adventure.

Considered one of the Blue Ridge Parkway's hidden secrets, Otter Creek Recreation Area offers everything we love about Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains: abundant wildlife, beautiful mountain vistas, and views as far as the eye can see. We recommend hiking the Abbott Lake Trail for one of the best introductions to the area. It's a one-mile loop trail that's considered easy and takes less than 20 minutes to complete.

One of the best parts about this trail is that it's completely flat, with smooth paved or boardwalk surfaces throughout. Though it's a short trail, it packs a big punch in terms of scenery. Hikers will enjoy the beautiful hardwood trees, stunning water scenery, and views of the Peaks of Otter.

As you continue along the trail, you'll also notice a historic structure known as Polly's Ordinary. This cabin dates back to the early 1800s, when it operated as an inn for mountain travelers passing through the area. A woman named Polly Woods provided warm meals, a comfortable bed, and a place for guests to stable their horses. It's a fascinating glimpse of history and a reminder that these mountains were once quite difficult to navigate.

If you have time for another excursion, the Otter Creek Loop is another one-mile loop with beautiful lake views. It has more incline than the other trail, and there are a couple of stream crossings to navigate, so it's considered moderately challenging. One of the highlights includes the dam, which features a beautiful waterfall. Dogs are welcome on both the Abbott Lake Trail and the Otter Creek Loop, but they must remain on leashes.

For those who are craving the beauty of Virginia's mountains, this lesser-known natural escape promises to impress. After spending some time in nature, we recommend driving about 35 minutes to Lexington. If you need a place to stay, this secluded cabin with mountain views is idyllic!
