The Best Dog-Friendly Hikes in Virginia for an Outdoor Adventure
You and your four-legged friend will have a blast hiking these scenic trails together.
The only thing that makes hiking in Virginia even better is hiking with someone you love. And, of course, that includes our favorite furry four-legged pals. Whether you're trekking up a mountain or venturing through the woods, this list of dog-friendly hikes in Virginia has something for everyone to enjoy. So pack plenty of water, bring a snack, and don't forget to have a leash handy!
1. Humpback Rocks
Humpback Rocks is one of my all-time favorite hikes in Virginia. It's located just off the Blue Ridge Parkway and is one of the best trails for a scenic overlook. It's a little under a mile each way, but it's a steep mile, and you'll be huffing and puffing by the time you get to the top. It's also a dog-friendly trail, though I'd recommend keeping your pup on a leash the whole time, as this trek can get quite crowded. (I've also spotted a black bear in the woods near the trail before!)
2. Ariso's Blooms Park Trail
This 3.5-mile loop trail near Clifton, Virginia, is a lovely, paved trail that offers scenic views and quality time in the great outdoors. There are definitely some steep sections of the trail, so sturdy hiking shoes are recommended. This trail is dog-friendly and has plenty of waste disposal bins.
3. First Landing Loop Trail
If you're looking for dog-friendly destinations around Virginia Beach, the trail system at First Landing State Park is a great option. First Landing Loop Trail is an 8.4-mile circuit that will take you through the park's best scenery: Live oaks adorned with Spanish moss, sandy banks, and cypress swamps. The trails range from sandy to forested to boardwalk, offering you and your pup lots of variety. Just be sure to keep your dog on a leash!
4. Burke Lake Trail
Burke Lake is a well-loved hiking area thanks to its flat walking paths, beautiful lake views, and well-maintained facilities. You and your furry friend will love taking the Burke Lake Trail, a 4.8-mile loop around the park that's relatively flat and easy to follow. This trail is popular among runners and bikers, so keeping your dog on a leash is a good idea.
5. First Battle of Manassas Trail Loop
History and nature come together at the First Battle of Manassas Trail Loop, located within Manassas Battlefield National Park. This well-maintained trail measures 5.2 miles and takes most hikers about two hours to complete. Don't rush it, though; there are many historically significant landmarks to read about along the way. This was the site of the first major Union and Confederate battle in July 1861. You should also keep your dog on a leash for most of this trail, as there are two road crossings along the way.
