Stroll Then Swim on This Beach Hike in Virginia That’s Perfect for Summer

Enjoy a family-friendly hike and quality beach time at one of the most summer-friendly state parks in Virginia.

I don't make it to Virginia Beach every summer, but I'd like to. It's such a vibrant city, and even in the middle of summer amidst the bustling boardwalk and busy restaurants, the effect of being so close to the ocean is undeniably grounding. When I do make it out to the coast, I always plan an excursion to one of my favorite state parks: First Landing. It's a quieter, more rugged experience of Virginia Beach, and, in my opinion, offers some of the best hiking and swimming in the state.

My advice for First Landing State Park: arrive early. This will ensure you snag a parking spot and can enjoy the trails and beach before the hottest part of the day. In terms of hiking, you'll have lots of trails to choose from. But if you're planning on hiking and swimming, your best bet is the short-and-sweet Bald Cypress Trail. It's a 1.7-mile loop trail that most hikers complete in just over 30 minutes. The trail is comprised of a boardwalk that will take you through swampy forests filled with bald cypress trees. They are considered "bald" because, unlike most conifers, they actually lose their needles in the winter. Also characteristic of this tree is the wide base, which flares dramatically. (Fun fact: The tallest recorded tree in Virginia measures 145 feet; the widest is 17 feet in diameter!)

The trail is well-marked, easy to follow, and almost entirely shaded—a bonus in the summer! Birding enthusiasts will want to keep on the lookout for broad-tailed hawks and red-bellied woodpeckers. It's kid-friendly, dog-friendly, and, unfortunately, bug-friendly, so be sure to pack your insect repellent.

After your hiking excursion, head back to the lot to grab your swimming gear, because a dip in the water is the perfect way to end your First Landing adventure. Unlike most of Virginia Beach, the swimming area here is located along the Chesapeake Bay. This makes for calmer, gentler waters that are perfect for younger swimmers. There are still waves to play in, but they don't crash down as dramatically. Getting to the beach from the parking area is easy; there are four boardwalks that provide access and take you over the sand dunes. It's important not to walk directly on the dunes as they are a vital habitat for plant and animal life.

It's important to note that there are no lifeguards at First Landing State Park Beach, so you'll be swimming at your own risk. After you've enjoyed the beach, you'll appreciate the outdoor showers where you can rinse your feet off before getting back in the car. There are also bathrooms and changing rooms located near the parking lot.

Camping is available between March and November, so if you'd like to extend your stay at this lovely coastal destination, be sure to book a site in advance.
