The Hike in Vermont That’s 100% Worth Braving the Cold
Stroll or bike the Stowe Recreation Path, one of the best winter hikes in Vermont that follows along a river, past meadows, and through the woods.
Even on the coldest days, winter doesn’t intimidate Vermonters. Life tends to carry on despite the sometimes brutal temperatures and snow, and that means adding outdoor adventures to our must-do list. If you’re short on time or feel like relaxing for a few hours, bundle up, pull on a pair of warm wool socks, and set off on the Stowe Recreational Path, one of the best winter hikes in Vermont.
Lauded internationally as one of the best greenways in the country, the Stowe Recreation Path promises a variety of breathtaking natural and manmade beauty along 5.3 miles that travel from Stowe Village to Mountain Road (or vice-versa). Because the paved trail is predominantly flat, it is popular with hikers and bikers and accessible to wheelchairs and strollers. Leashed pups are also welcome as long as you clean up after your furry friend.
Scoring an easy rating, the Stowe Recreation Path is open year-round. The family-friendly trail offers the chance to admire the blossoming landscapes in the spring, cool off with a swim in the West Branch River in the summer, and leaf peep in the fall. During the winter, particularly with a light dusting of snow on the ground, the trail transforms into a wonderland, drawing hikers and cross-country skiers. Parts of the trail are narrow, which could be a bit of a challenge when there are crowds.
Before you hit the trail, decide whether to start from Stowe Village or Topnotch Resort on Mountain Road. Parking is available on both ends. If you’re starting on the Stowe Village side, park in the lot at Lintilhac Park or nearby Chase Park while Thompson Park offers parking at the other end. Each lot is only a short walk to the trail.
Whether you decide to explore on foot, bike, or skis, you’ll be treated to a spectacular display of beauty as you pass sprawling snow-blanketed meadows, wooded areas, and the West Branch of the Little River. Stroll through the Brookdale Covered Bridge, over footbridges, and to a stone gazebo. Stop to admire and snap photos, one of my favorite parts of hiking in Vermont, of the snow-capped mountains in the background, and go off the path to check out the nearby shops and restaurants if you’re not in a hurry.
