It’s an Epic Desert Adventure Hiking to the Vortex in Utah
For an adventure through the southern Utah desert, lace up your hiking boots and hike to the Vortex in Utah.
Utah is home to incredible adventures. From its national parks to its cities, there are the most extraordinary places to visit and explore. If you are looking for a true outdoor adventure, and one that you will remember for years to come, a hike to the Vortex is an absolute must. Located in southern Utah, not far from Gunlock, this extraordinary natural wonder is one you need to see in person.
Located in the Red Mountain Wilderness in southwestern Utah is the Lower Sand Cove Trail, also known as the Vortex by locals. This trail will take you to the most remarkable natural wonder, a bowl-shaped rock formation that may be one of Mother Nature's greatest creations. You will find the trailhead off Lower Sand Cove Road just east of Gunlock.
This is a 2.3-mile out-and-back trail. The hike is considered moderately challenging as there are some steep inclines you must tackle. You may also encounter some rock scrambling and the trail can be difficult to follow in areas. Come prepared for the challenge. Believe me, it'll be worth it.
This journey will take you through the southern Utah desert, and you will have little shade along the way. It is best to avoid this trail in the summer months as southern Utah's scorching sun isn't always friendly. Some portions of the trail can be difficult to follow as well. I recommend using AllTrails+ for the ability to download a trail map. Although, once you reach the Vortex, you will be glad you made the trek. The Vortex is essentially a giant bowl in the sandstone, which was carved by wind and water erosion.
Make sure you have a camera handy because this isn’t some small hole in the rocks — it’s massive. You will immediately know when you have reached your destination. Take a walk around the bowl or sit back and just enjoy this natural wonder — it's nature incredible?
And not only will you see the Vortex on your journey, but there are also smaller bowls along the way. These little bowls fill up with water, creating small pools that range in size and shape. This is one trail that is full of surprises.
