5 Hikes With the Best Sunset Views in Utah
A warm, glowing sunset can brighten any mood, so plan a hike to gaze at awe-inspiring sunset views in Utah.
Did you know that sunsets are one of the most photographed natural phenomena in the world? Rightfully so, because a beautiful, warm sunset is magical, poetic, and awe-inspiring. I think it’s the best way to bid farewell to the day. Gazing at the sun as it makes its descent is one of my favorite pastime activities. Personally, I have hundreds of pics of Golden Hour in my collection, and what I adore the most is that no two sunsets are alike. If you like watching the colors dance across the gorgeous evening sky like I do, check out the best sunset hikes in Utah. Chances are, these magical hiking trails in the Beehive State will inspire you to pause and appreciate the simpler things in life.
Before you leave for your hike, remember timing is everything. So, if you want the most incredible seat in the house, plan your trip for at least an hour (or two) before the sun begins to set. Pack a snack and download AllTrails+ to avoid any hiccups along the way. Now, if you’re ready, let’s hit the trails to enjoy these stunning sunset views in Utah.
1. Sunset Peak, Salt Lake City
A hike to Sunset Peak inside the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest is a no-brainer. After all, the name says it all! At over 10,000 feet above sea level and with an elevation gain of 1,975 feet, this is one of the best spots in Utah to see the colors in the changing sky. The six-mile out-and-back trek is challenging, with steep inclines, but you won’t be disappointed. With panoramic views of the Wasatch Mountains, several serene lakes, and Big Cottonwood Canyon, coupled with a gorgeous sunset, you’ll be blown away by the picturesque views.
2. Lake Mary Trail, Salt Lake City
Understandably, some of us can’t trek to the top of Sunset Peak. But don’t worry, there is an easier trail nearby. Let’s hike the two-mile trail to Lake Mary instead. While the sweeping views aren’t quite the same, you’ll still witness one of the prettiest sunsets in Utah here. Between the stunning lake and the rocky mountainous terrain, the unbelievable views will melt your heart. It’s easy to see why locals and visitors love Lake Mary Trail so much.
3. Buffalo Point Trail - Antelope Island, Syracuse
There are 100 reasons to visit Antelope Island, but watching the sunsets here is by far the best. They are truly magical! The Buffalo Point Trail is one of the best hiking trails in Antelope Island State Park to witness the once-in-a-lifetime moment. The dreamy scene as the delicate hues kiss the surface of the Great Salt Lake is so mesmerizing. Besides being short and scenic, what I love most about this one-mile trail is that it's dog- and kid-friendly. So, bring them along to gaze at the sun going down.
4. Bryce Traverse - Bryce Canyon National Park, Panguitch
Let’s be real: if you have not been to Bryce Canyon National Park, you are missing out on the “most colorful sunsets in Utah.” Sure, you can visit for the panoramic views of the horseshoe-shaped canyons and the jaw-dropping hoodoo rock formations, but seeing the sunset here will literally change your life, too. The five-mile Bryce Traverse Trail is one of the best routes to access the Bryce Amphitheater and the overlooks. For the most ideal experience, you might need to take a shuttle to get to this trail. No matter what, plan your trip to marvel at the sunsets here.
5. Goosenecks and Sunset Point Trail - Capitol Reef, Torrey
After witnessing the sunset at Goosenecks and Sunset Point inside Capitol Reef National Park, you’ll think of one word: otherworldly. Gazing at the contrast between the red rock canyons and the vibrant hues in the sky can rejuvenate any weary soul. The highlight of this kid-friendly 2.5-mile trail is that it requires very little effort for the enormous rewards. Pro Tip: This is a popular destination for photographers, so you might want to get here early (at least two hours) to secure your spot. And trust me, you’ll want to bring your camera, too!
As you can tell, these hikes range in difficulty. My best advice is to be prepared for any condition. Wear sturdy hiking shoes, and don’t forget to download AllTrails+. You never know when it will come in handy.
