The Little Known Cave in Texas That Everyone Should Explore at Least Once

The Lone Star State boasts quite a few cave systems, but most are commercialized and lack the thrill of discovery that some of us seek. I bet you didn't know that one of our most popular and revered Texas state parks is hiding a secret that few people know about, so you’ll feel like an explorer finding new territory. If you love unique adventures, then head to Concan, an unincorporated community in Uvalde County, to explore the Crystal Caves inside Garner State Park. As one of the best hidden caves in Texas, you should explore it at least once.

Situated in the Texas Hill Country, Garner State Park encompasses 2.9 miles of the Frio River, hiking trails, and a vast array of outdoor recreation to satisfy any lover of the great outdoors. While you can go tubing or canoeing on the river, there's also a miniature golf course in the park, as well as picnic tables, a visitor center, a concession stand, and camping options like tent sites and cabins.

Considering the park has 16 miles of trails situated on more than 1770 acres of Hill Country terrain, it's no wonder most people have never heard of Crystal Cave. The natural wonder is 30 feet deep, much cooler than surface temperatures, making it a great escape to cool off during the summer months, and is full of glittering crystals, hence its name.

The 1.4-mile loop trail takes approximately 45 minutes to hike and becomes fairly steep at certain points. It's still accessible to most people, provided they wear appropriate footwear and bring a flashlight or headlamp with them. The reward for hiking through this incredible cave is absolutely worth the effort and extra sweat.

Kids of all ages will have a blast exploring, especially during a month dedicated to what lurks in the darkness. Peer in each tiny crevice and around every corner to see what you might find.

When inside this remarkable cave, however, please refrain from etching anything onto the cave walls. Too many visitors have left their mark on the walls, but this is something that should not be done. Tempting as it may be to etch your name into the secret cavern, park officials ask us all to join them in preserving the area by tampering with it as little as possible.
