The Massive Texas Blizzard Of December 2015 Will Never Be Forgotten
Texas experienced a historic and devastating winter storm named Goliath in 2015, which brought record snowfall and significant losses.
I know what you're thinking: a blizzard? In the state famed for its total lack of winter? Indeed, Texas experienced a devastating winter storm in 2015 that was one of the worst in the nation's history. Appropriately named Goliath, the onslaught left thousands of people stranded and even more without the cattle they had been raising since birth. It was truly a tragedy - one we'll never forget. Goliath went down in local history as the largest blizzard in Texas, and to this day its memory chills locals to the core. Brrr! Bundle up, because these images will take you back to that extra chilly winter.
The very day after Christmas, Goliath swept into Texas and brought with it the largest swath of snowfall in our state's history.
This was the Aggie stadium after getting pounded for two straight days - the College Station area received 11 inches of snow from the storm.
Goliath set the record in Friona, which started recording in 1927, for the most snowfall in a 48-hour period (20 inches!)
The El Paso International Airport picked up 8.1 inches, exceeding its average annual snowfall of 5.5 inches.
Farmers lost over 35,000 dairy cows in the unrelenting onslaught - a tragedy considering Texas supplies 10% of the nation's milk.
Flights were cancelled, schools closed, roads impassable...the entirety of the Plains and Panhandle regions was essentially on lockdown while the storm raged on.
Even Del Rio, a city where snow hadn't accumulated since 2012, received light snow and sleet.
The aptly named winter storm Goliath was an epic demonstration of how unpredictable Texas weather can be. We may be in the Deep South, but we aren't immune to being ravaged by unforgiving snow.
