Don’t Try This One Hike in Tennessee If You’re Afraid of Heights
This extreme hike in Tennessee features a seemingly endless staircase and a 1,286-foot elevation gain, but rewards those who make it to the top with one of the best views in the state.
Some of the best hikes in Tennessee will take you to summits where you feel like you’re on top of the world. Of course, many of those trails are strenuous to say the least, and aren’t the best option for beginner hikers. As long as you’re not afraid of heights, there’s an incredible trail in Great Smoky Mountains National Park that might just be the most extreme hike in Tennessee. Whether you want to level up your hiking game or take yourself to new heights (literally), then you should add this epic hike to your bucket list.
The Chimney Tops Trail is one of the best trails in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The out-and-back trail is a seven-mile round-trip through the mountains and offers some drop-dead gorgeous views of Mount LeConte and Sugarland Mountain.
Despite its difficulty, the trail remains a popular destination, and parking is limited. The earlier you arrive, the better. Don’t forget your parking tag!
In the 3.7-mile trek to the top, there’s 1,286 feet of elevation gain. Early on, it’s not so bad, as you’re hiking through the forest and over water crossings. The first mile is full of small waterfalls and scenic forest views. Then… be prepared to get your steps in.
The majority of this trail, especially at the top, is stairs. Just when you think you’re done with stairs, you come around the corner to find more stairs. There is no prize for speed, so be sure to take your time and rest when you can.
The trail can be icy and slippery in the winter, so I recommend adding this one to your spring hiking list. It’s a trade-off, because you can see through the trees more in the winter, but those wildflowers in the spring make the hike even more scenic. And you just know this trail is drop-dead gorgeous in the fall.
Regretfully, the last .25 miles of this trail are closed because the area was damaged in a wildfire in 2016. You’ll easily see the gate, and obviously, it’s not safe to continue to the top. The good news is that the Chimney Tops Trail viewpoint just moved a little closer, and you can still catch some incredible views.
There are a few sets of stairs at the viewpoint to celebrate that you have become a stairmaster. Sit for a spell, take in the views, and enjoy a snack at the viewpoint! Give your legs enough time to recover, because what goes up must come down, and those stairs will be waiting for you!
Even though this trail doesn’t require any technical climbing skills, those endless stairs will absolutely give your legs a workout. Go at your own pace, and remember: the goal isn't the viewpoint, it's the view of the car at the end of the hike. Visit the official website for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to learn more.
